The objective of this promotion is to attract new families to your restaurant. It’s a chance to show that you really are a family-orientated venue and win a few brownie points from the parents.

Put together a children’s menu with four or five items. Include a soft drink or bottled water and an ice cream for pudding. Instead of the run-of-the-mill chicken nuggets and tomato pizza, try to promote your restaurant as a healthier place. Include grilled chicken, pasta, baked potatoes and fishcakes in your offer, all inexpensive and quick and easy to make.

Make clear any restrictions such as ‘one child for £1 per adult dining’ or ‘discounted meals available only from children’s menu’. State the period that the offer is valid and any days and times that are excluded.

Make sure there’s something to entertain the kids, like drawing materials or table games, to stop them running wild in the place. If you have the space, it’s worth designating a particular area to parents with children. That way Mums and Dads don’t have to worry about their offspring disturbing other diners and customers without children can enjoy them at a distance.

Although this promo works well at any time, school holidays in particular present a great opportunity to fill your restaurant with families. Harassed parents are always relieved to find a child-friendly venue.

Small gifts for the kids are always popular but steer clear of anything that might be considered dangerous (no sharp objects or swallowable bits of plastic for example). Drawing paper and non-toxic crayons, books, comics, balloons and playing cards are usually OK and require only a small outlay. Paper hats and badges also go down well (attach stick-on  labels bearing the name of your venue if your finances will run to it ).

Always use child-friendly staff and SMILE everybody!
