Promoting your gift vouchers
The success of a gift voucher scheme depends on getting the word out there so once
you’ve produced your vouchers let everyone know they’re available. Use table talkers
or tent cards; put posters in the window, in the cloakrooms, next to the till; even
consider an external banner in the car park but keep it tasteful as these can so
easily look tacky. Circulate everyone on your database; promote your vouchers in
your monthly newsletter, on your Facebook page, tweet them on Twitter, mention them
to other local businesses, especially those that you’ve previously done any joint
marketing with. The more people who know you sell gift vouchers, the more will consider
buying them as presents for others.
You could tempt customers with an offer they
can't refuse, for example, a £50 gift voucher for £40. You can afford to sell them
at a discount because the customers who redeem them will probably spend more on the
night and, according to one American restaurant website, up to 20% of them, surprisingly,
are never actually redeemed!
Get staff involved in the promotion process too. Make sure they all know about the
gift vouchers and how to talk them up to customers. Offer a small incentive such
as a store voucher or a bottle of bubbly for every ten they sell. Even team up with
another local business and do a swap with your staff incentives – for example, you
pay the hairdresser for a voucher for a free haircut for your staff when they reach
their target and the hairdresser pays you for a meal voucher in your restaurant for
hairdressing staff who’ve had to work extra shifts in the run up to Christmas.
Important note re VAT – This feature purposely ignores the effects of VAT, a complex
topic which varies from one country to another and is outside the scope of a marketing
website. Before embarking on any promotion involving vouchers, tokens or discounts,
